Calavi Kpota Health Center's Journey: From Overburdened to Efficient with eLMIS

The Calavi Kpota Healthcare Center in Abomey-Calavi, Benin, has undergone a remarkable transformation with the introduction of the electronic logistics management information system (eLMIS), a collaborative initiative between USAID, and Benin’s Ministry of Health through the project Global Health Supply Chain Technical Assistance Francophone Task Order implemented by Chemonics. This revolutionary system has redefined the management of health commodities, profoundly impacting both healthcare providers and patients by continued availability of health products.

Annette Acakpo, a state-licensed nurse at the center, encapsulates this change. Reflecting on the pre-eLMIS era, she notes, "It took us three to four days just to receive our orders." The advent of eLMIS has altered this drastically: "Now, I can complete the order cycle in 24 hours, significantly enhancing our ability to provide timely healthcare."

The facility's transformation was further highlighted during a visit by Gregory Howell, Deputy Mission Director for USAID/West Africa, and Herbert Smith, Country Representative for Benin. Their tour, aimed at observing the practical benefits of eLMIS, showcased the system's role in streamlining processes and improving efficiency within the facility. The delegation's tour through the well-organized pharmacy and warehouse illustrated the tangible outcomes of eLMIS in action, including efficient management of health commodities expiration dates and the prevention of stockout.

Annette, while praising the system, pointed out the need for improvement in network and internet connectivity to enhance order submission. This feedback is essential for the continuous refinement of eLMIS.
