Regional Overview

Hosting a vast proportion of the world’s shipping and global fisheries, Pacific waters supply food and income to millions of people in the Pacific Islands region and beyond. Yet, the region’s stability and vitality are threatened by debilitating natural disasters and development challenges.

Based in Suva, Fiji, the USAID/Pacific Islands Mission has primary responsibility over USAID programs in nine Pacific Island countries: Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Located in Port Moresby, USAID/Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu oversees activities in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. USAID currently has staff located in Fiji, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and Solomon Islands.

A Pacific country, the United States—through USAID—partners with 12 Pacific Island nations to bolster their ability to lead their countries to stable, prosperous futures. The Pacific Island nations are central to American efforts to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific region that bolsters the global economy. We focus on strengthening disaster preparedness and responding to climate change, and supporting and promoting economic development, health, and democratic governance. USAID is committed to making an enduring, positive impact across the diverse countries in the Pacific Islands region. USAID is here to listen, partner, and deliver—together.
