Maldives
Country Overview
Maldives is an archipelago of 1,200 coral islands grouped in 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean. Its highest point is only eight feet above sea level, making it extremely vulnerable to global climate change. Anchored along major international trade routes, a peaceful and resilient Maldives is critical to maritime security and regional stability.
The United States partners with the Government of Maldives to strengthen environmental resilience, implement economic and democratic reforms, and build a robust civil society. USAID programs focus on protecting the environment, augmenting democratic governance, and strengthening public financial management.
