At the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Zone (CHUZ) in Abomey-Calavi, where Dr. Inès Zohoungbogbo practices, the impact of a key initiative is evident. This program, developed and implemented by the Government of Benin, and known as ‘Assurance Maladie pour le Renforcement du Capital Humain’ (AM-ARCH) is making a tangible difference. Specialized in public health and working at CHUZ since 2020, she has witnessed firsthand the difference that AM-ARCH has made for patients, particularly those she describes as the "extreme poor."

Dr. Inès recounts the despair that accompanies cases of severe malaria, a condition all too common in her community. Before AM-ARCH, when such patients lacked the financial resources for treatment, the situation often seemed hopeless. Now, the insurance guarantees that patients receive prompt and effective care, which in turn leads to better outcomes. "It's truly an asset," she states. "The sense of relief that comes with knowing a patient has healthcare coverage is profound for both the healthcare provider and the patient."

Thanks to AM-ARCH insurance, we can provide fast, efficient care, which leads to much better results. It's a real asset. The relief of knowing our patients are covered is profound.

- Dr. Inès Zohoungbogbo

The doctor observes that having this resource is a significant advantage for those who are most vulnerable. However, despite the successes, Dr. Inès identifies a challenge: the need to expand health coverage. Many pathologies are not covered by the insurance, leaving gaps in care that need to be addressed. Her hope is to see the coverage extended to include a broader range of conditions.

For Dr. Inès, the efficient and prompt care that insured patients receive is not just a benefit; it's a critical asset. It's a stark reminder of the ongoing work necessary to strengthen health systems — work that Dr. Inès is passionate about furthering. Through her lens, the AM-ARCH program is not just a health initiative; it's a lifeline that could reach even further with expanded coverage, a dream she harbors for the future of healthcare in her community.

The HSS Accelerator, a USAID/Benin activity, has been instrumental in the expansion of the AM-ARCH program throughout Benin. In collaboration with the National Social Protection Agency (ANPS), AM-ARCH has been extended to all of Benin’s 77 communes. With one million registered beneficiaries, the HSS Accelerator has supported the program in incorporating community feedback and coordination with relevant partners.
