BIFAD PUBLIC MEETING MINUTES; FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS - DES MOINES, IOWA - OCTOBER 16, 2018

IMPROVING NUTRITION THROUGH PRIVATE SECTOR ENGAGEMENT WITHIN FOOD SYSTEMS

The central theme of this meeting was to identify opportunities and synthesize recommendations on how to work with the private sector to develop food systems that support improved nutrition among vulnerable populations. Strengthening food systems while ensuring greater engagement with the private sector to increase the availability, access, and utlilization of nutritious foods is critical. The meeting addressed these key questions:

  • How can the public and private sectors work in concert at different points in the food system to improve the demand, accessability, and affordability of high quality diets?
  • What support does the private sector need from the public sector to be more effective in reaching vulnerable populations to improve diet quality while maintaining profitability and viability?
  • What is required to improve the accountability and transparency of public and private sector engagement in improving diets.
