Bujumbura, Burundi – August 24, 2023
In a noteworthy act of diplomacy and partnership, the United States Government has officially transferred two strategically located office buildings in Bujumbura, worth USD 1.32 million (approximately 3.6 billion BIF), to the Government of Burundi.
The ceremony formalizing the permanent transfer of ownership was conducted by Paul Richardson, the Country Representative for USAID/Burundi, and Ferdinand Bashikako, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation for the Government of Burundi.
Following a Trust Agreement signed by the Government of Burundi in July 1990, these buildings were initially purchased and utilized by USAID/Burundi as their principal offices. Later, after USAID relocated to the new U.S. Embassy compound, the buildings—encompassing a total area of approximately 2,860 square meters—served as vital hubs for USAID’s partners. This versatile usage has led to the implementation of a wide range of impactful activities funded by USAID that have been instrumental in advancing Burundi’s development.
