Integrated Responses on Migration from Central America

OVERVIEW

USAID’s $57.7 million regional project, “Integrated Responses on Migration from Central America,” with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), helps returned migrants build a better life at home.

USAID and IOM assist government and non-government institutions providing services to returned migrants upon their return to their home country, reintegrating them effectively into their communities.

The program is assisting migration authorities in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras to provide immediate services in reception centers, such as health care, humanitarian assistance, psychosocial counseling, and reference to a variety of services in the municipalities for a dignified return. Similar activities are implemented in Belize, Costa Rica, and Panama to facilitate the integration of migrants.

PRIORITIES

USAID and IOM, in coordination with national and municipal authorities, the private sector and civil society organizations, help returnees reintegrate into their communities. 

Among the services provided upon reentry are workforce training and job placement, school reintegration and access to other programs and services, as well as health and psychosocial counseling. These services are available to all members of the community. 

The project promotes community harmony through campaigns that reduce stigma and discrimination towards people who have been returned.

The project also provides data management and analysis of migration flows, facilitating the generation of evidence-based public policies.
