USAID representatives traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica, to participate in the Central America Donors Forum (CADF) September 25-27. CADF 2023 brought together hundreds of cross-sector leaders to chart a renewed vision of peace and justice in Central America.
Organized by the Seattle International Foundation, CADF is the premier space for civil society, philanthropy, government, and business to discuss priority issues in Central America, expand networks and advance development, equity, and justice in the region.
As part of the CADF agenda, on September 26, Deputy Assistant Administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mileydi Guilarte, delivered a keynote address titled “Uniting Efforts to Protect, Defend, and Promote Civic Space in Central America.” She also announced the provision of $3 million towards investigative journalism and anti-corruption initiatives across Central America, in support of the U.S. Government Voices Initiative, a part of the Biden-Harris Administration's Root Causes Strategy.
In this context, Mileydi Guilarte discussed the advances and challenges related to civic space in the region and the ongoing agenda to bring together like-minded partners to foster conditions that allow civil society to flourish and ensure governments are more accountable.
