OVERVIEW

Amazonia Connect works with public and private sector actors in Peru, Brazil, and Colombia to reduce habitat loss and commodity-driven deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.  The activity uses an end-to-end supply chain approach, meaning that it engages actors throughout the supply chain, and promotes low carbon agriculture (LCA) production. Amazonia connect is implemented in Meta and Caquetá in Colombia, and it runs March 2022 to March 2027.

The goal of Amazonia Connect is to minimize the negative impact that agriculture has on the Amazon rainforest.  The Amazon is home to a quarter of all terrestrial biodiversity on Earth, and is it serves as a vital global carbon sink. Coffee, palm oil, and cattle for meat and dairy are the main agricultural commodities linked to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and carbon emissions in the Amazon. Although many companies that work in these commodities have made commitments to eliminate deforestation from their supply chains, hardly any companies are on track to achieve their deforestation goals.

GOALS

SCALE-UP SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Amazonia Connect encourages producers to adopt more sustainable forms of agricultural production, including low carbon agriculture (LCA) and deforestation-free production (DFP).  The activity also helps companies implement DFP sourcing and production guidelines.

MONITOR AGRICULTURAL SUPPLY CHAINS

 

Amazonia Connect helps private sector actors understand and adopt advanced supply chain monitoring systems needed to conserve biodiversity and source inputs from deforestation-free agriculture.

INCENTIVIZE GREEN INVESTMENT

Amazonia Connect incentivizes private sector actors’ use of sustainable agricultural models by helping these actors access finance and incentives, like carbon credits, associated with environmental protection and carbon capture projects.

DISSEMINATE RESEARCH AND INFORMATION

Amazonia Connect supports the collection and dissemination of research, including policy briefs and scientific papers, needed to improve public and private sector actors’ understanding and use of sustainable agricultural in their supply chains.

ANTICIPATED RESULTS 

  • Engage over 5,000 agricultural producers in sustainable agricultural production; 
  • Leverage USD $5 million in finance and incentives to encourage producers to adopt LCA;
  • Expand private sector actors’ use of low carbon and deforestation-free agricultural across 214,806 hectares of the Amazon;
  • Turn research into actionable knowledge for supply chain stakeholders, including policymakers, private companies, and multi-stakeholder platforms;
  • Connect 129,000 hectares of farmland with finance, digital tools, and technology needed to improve production and reduce environmental impacts; and
  • Implement advanced supply chain monitoring systems in ten private companies that buy from producers in the Amazon, ensuring deforestation-free sourcing and biodiversity monitoring.
