USAID works in the East Africa region to provide humanitarian assistance to communities experiencing natural disasters, conflict, or acute food insecurity.

Humanitarian Assistance

USAID works with public international organizations, including the United Nations,, international non-governmental organizations, and local partners to provide humanitarian assistance to vulnerable populations and strengthen their resilience in anticipation of future crises.  USAID supports humanitarian efforts throughout the region, including responses to armed conflict, natural disasters, and climatic shocks across East and Central Africa.  In these contexts, USAID Humanitarian Assistance support includes:

  • Distribution of emergency relief supplies
  • Interventions to increase access to critical health, nutrition, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services
  • Provision of protection assistance
  • Food security interventions, including cash assistance to buy food from markets and in-kind food aid
  • Livelihoods Support
  • Emergency Shelter Support

USAID-supported humanitarian assistance is targeted to meet the life-saving needs of the most vulnerable populations in the region, including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and host communities.
