PRIORITY AREAS

ECONOMIC GROWTH AND FOOD SECURITY

USAID supports the GoG in creating a prosperous and diversified economy. Through the Feed the Future initiative, USAID helps Ghana enhance agricultural productivity and profitability while promoting nutrition. USAID also supports bilateral trade and investment and Ghana’s coastal
fisheries 

DEMOCRACY, HUMAN RIGHTS, AND GOVERNANCE 

USAID supports the GoG to strengthen accountability for critical government services, and to implement priority public financial management reforms, ensuring that governance is increasingly transparent, effective, and responsive to citizens. USAID also promotes peaceful and credible electoral processes and seeks to strengthen Ghanaian institutions and communities to resist violent extremists threats and peacefully resolve conflict.

GLOBAL HEALTH

USAID integrated health programming supports the GoG in the areas of maternal, reproductive, newborn and child health, as well as malaria, HIV, social protection, water, sanitation and hygiene, health system strengthening, global health security, and COVID-19. USAID also partners with the
GoG to build a more resilient health system and prepare Ghana to face current and future health emergencies. In addition to regular programming across the health sector, the U.S. Government, through USAID, provided more than $61 million in support for Ghana’s COVID-19 response, including
their effort to fully vaccinate Ghana's target of 22.9 million people. USAID partners with the GoG, private water suppliers and communities to strengthen Ghanaians’ access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services.

EDUCATION

USAID collaborates with the GoG, teachers, and citizens to strengthen accountable education systems to deliver high-quality, equitable basic education that improves children’s learning outcomes. This programming supports Ghana to deliver quality education to students in both public and private schools to reach marginalized students in kindergarten through sixth grade. USAID also partners with the GoG to enhance Ghana’s capacity to measure learning outcomes, use data to improve school management, and increase financing for education.

SOCIAL PROTECTION

USAID partners with UNICEF to support the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) to strengthen social protection and welfare systems for improved health outcomes of marginalized women and children.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Ghana has many distinct ecological zones, and rising sea levels, drought, higher temperatures, and erratic rainfall negatively impact infrastructure, hydropower production, food security, and coastal and agricultural livelihoods. USAID works to mitigate the effects of climate change by supporting the expansion of clean, reliable energy. USAID also works with smallholder farmers and fishers to adopt more sustainable agricultural and fishing practices, reduce deforestation, and build community resilience to changing rainfall, rising sea levels, and rising temperatures.

INCREASING ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE ENERGY

Unreliable and costly supply of electric power slows growth across the economy. The sector is also a fiscal burden which limits the ability of Ghana to provide social services. The United States Government, through the Power Africa initiative, supported the development of 7550 megawatts (MW) of electricity and solar-hydro generation projects. In Ghana, Power Africa has supported the development of 550 MW in electricity generation. The partnership aims to add over 30,000 megawatts (MW) access to clean, reliable electricity for more than 590 million people.
