On May 27, 2024, the government of Tanzania held a side event focused on strengthening primary health care through implementation of the Integrated and Coordinated Community Health Workers Program (ICCHWP) in Tanzania. Assistant Administrator Gawande spoke on a panel about USAID's support for community health workers, strengthening primary health care in Tanzania, and our strong partnership with the Tanzanian government. Minister Ummy Mwalimu, Minister of Health-Tanzania mainland, Minister Nassor Mazrui, Minister of Health-Zanzibar, Hon. Mohamed Mchengerwa, State Minister-Regional Authority and Local Government, and Professor Marcel Tanner, Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute joined him on the panel.
Towards a future free from lead exposure: A ministerial dialogue on preventing maternal and child exposure to toxic lead

On May 29, 2024, USAID and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) co-hosted a side event on preventing maternal and child exposure to toxic lead. Assistant Administrator Gawande led a panel conversation with ministers of health from Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Vietnam, technical experts, advocates, and policy makers to elevate awareness and explore the tools available to curb lead exposure and its detrimental health impacts. Panelists included Dr. Mohammed Abdulaziz , Head of Disease Control and Prevention of Africa CDC, Professor Sabrina Flora, Directorate General of Health Services, Bangladesh, Dr. Nguyen Thi Lien Huong, Vice Minister of Health of Vietnam and Dr. Mohammed Pate, Minister of Health and Social Welfare for Nigeria. Dr. Howard Hu, Flora L. Thornton Chair and Professor, Department of Population and Public Health Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California and Larah Ibanez, Pure Earth's Country Director for the Philippines joined virtually. Dr. Anshu Banerjee, Director for the Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing for WHO and Ted Chaiban, Deputy Executive Director of Humanitarian Action and Supply Operations for UNICEF provided opening and closing remarks.
