Overview
Guinea experienced the fourth military coup since its independence on September 5, 2021. During the subsequent transition period, USAID has supported Guinea’s return to democratic rule through activities designed to promote a transparent electoral process, to encourage citizens to participate in elections and as voters and candidates. While the transition takes precedence, USAID continues to promote the rule of law, renewal of the social contract, peacebuilding, combating human trafficking, and the equal treatment of all Guinean citizens. USAID currently supports the following four activities towards that goal.
Supporting the Transition and Electoral Processes” (STEP) activity
USAID’s STEP activity is a four-year project implemented by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES). This activity promotes successful and timely transition to democratic governance in Guinea through investments in the transition and electoral processes, and through civic and voter education for inclusive, peaceful, and transparent political discourse.
Wakili- Women and Engagement Activity
USAID/Guinea ‘s WAKILI – Femme et Engagement activity facilitates the participation of women and youth in peacebuilding mechanisms and decision-making bodies in Guinea. The activity bolsters the socioeconomic resilience of women and youth while actively involving opinion leaders and local authorities in peacebuilding and social cohesion activities. The activity seeks to enhance the capabilities of local organizations to advocate for peace, security, and social cohesion focusing on structures representing women and youth.
Preventing Risks and Occasions of Trafficking and Exploitation in Communities and Townships (PROTECT) Activity
Guinea is a country of origin, transit, and destination for victims of human trafficking, and until 2023 was on the U.S. Government’s Tier 2 Watchlist. To address this issue, USAID launched the “Preventing Risks and Occasions of Trafficking and Exploitation in Communities and Townships (PROTECT)”. This two-year activity implemented by Organisation Catholique pour Promotion Humaine (OCPH)/Caritas Guinee targets support to combating human trafficking in local communities. USAID targets specific regions in PROTECT and works to increase public awareness of TIP and its dangers in the communities and enhances coordination in response, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
Citizen Observation for Democratic Elections (CODE) Activity
In May 2024 USAID awarded a new activity “CODE”. USAID’s CODE will foster greater transparency and credibility of the electoral process and promote democratic stability in the country. CODE is a three year activity implemented by Democracy International and The Carter Center.
