BACKGROUND

Guinea experienced the fourth military coup since its independence on September 5, 2021 when the Guinean Special Forces removed former President Alpha Condé following a period of political turmoil, civil unrest, and an unconstitutional third term. Despite these challenges, USAID continues to bolster Guinea’s return to democratic rule through programs to establish a more inclusive, transparent and credible electoral process, and encourage citizens to participate in elections and political processes as voters and candidates. USAID also champions the human rights of all people living in Guinea by supporting peaceful engagement, improvements to the justice sector, and delivery of accessible public services through effective local governance.

GOALS

To support the current transition period which is decisive for Guinea’s return to democratic rule and to support efforts to bring lasting stability to the country and to the sub region, USAID launched the “Supporting the Transition and Electoral Processes” (STEP) activity. This is a four-year program that pursues two specific objectives:

Objective one: Establish a more inclusive, transparent, and credible electoral process that restores democratic rule in Guinea.

Objective two: Encourage citizens to participate peacefully and in an informed manner in elections and political processes as voters and candidates.

ANTICIPATED RESULTS

<>IF well-informed Guinean citizens engage actively and peacefully in the country’s legal, institutional, and political reforms during the transition and prior to elections, and if the reforms and electoral processes are credible, inclusive, and transparent, then Guinea’s democratically elected government will be more representative of and accountable to its citizens and its new constitutional and democratic order will be strengthened.
