USAID supports Guinea’s national health policy with an emphasis on strengthening local health systems to ensure community participation, stakeholder accountability, and transparency to improve demand for and access to high-quality health services. USAID’s support through the Global Health Security Agenda is helping build a resilient health system that is prepared to prevent, detect, and respond to public health threats. In addition, through the President’s Malaria Initiative, USAID’s support to the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) contributed to a nearly ⅔ reduction in malaria prevalence between 2012 and 2021.
Activities
“Notre Santé” Activity
USAID/Guinea’s new integrated local health health system strengthening activity, “Notre Santé” (“Our Health”) is now implemented in the regions of Boké, Kindia, and Labé and in the six communes of the capital city, Conakry. Notre Santé will increase the capacity and commitment of the local health system, improve access to safe, accessible, and affordable high-quality maternal, newborn and child health services, family planning, and malaria control and prevention services for Guineans.
The U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) Evolve Project
Since 2022, in support of malaria control and prevention, PMI’s entomology activity partner, Abt Associates/PMI Evolve, works with Guinea’s National Malaria Control Program to maintain, and build the national system for the monitoring and surveillance of vector-borne diseases. Activities include expanding awareness of mosquito species capable of spreading malaria, studying insecticide resistance of these mosquitoes, and cross-referencing national routine malaria data with entomology data.
The Promoting the Quality of Medicines Plus (PQM+) Program
Like several African countries, Guinea is disproportionately affected by the burden of poor-quality medicines. PQM+ addresses the challenge of poor-quality medical products in several countries. In Guinea, through PQM+, USAID works to strengthen the pharmaceutical system, to ensure access to safe and effective medicines, and to build up the country’s quality assurance system. In 2021, PQM+ initiated a Technical Assistance (TA) program in Guinea to support the Laboratory National de Contrôle de Qualité des Médicaments (LNCQM) in achieving ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation by 2025. By sharing scientific expertise and providing technical support and leadership, this activity helps to create more resilient local health systems.
"Act to End NTDs | West"
USAID provides assistance to the national Neglected Tropical Diseases program for the control and elimination of lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, roundworm, hookworm, and whipworm so that they are no longer a public health problem. Through the Act to End Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) project, USAID provides assistance to the national NTD program for the control and elimination of seven targeted NTDs in 24 health districts in Guinea.
USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program - Procurement and Supply Management (PSM)
The goal of GHSC-PSM is to ensure the uninterrupted supply of health commodities including malaria rapid diagnostic tests, antimalarial drugs, and family planning products. GHSC-PSM has also provided technical assistance to scale-up the implementation of electronic Logistics Management Information Systems (eLMIS) in all urban health facilities. USAID activity partner, Chemonics, procures and distributes malaria commodities in PMI focus regions and provides technical assistance on supply chain management nationwide.
Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA)
USAID’s support through the Global Health Security Agenda is helping to build a resilient health system that is prepared to prevent, detect, and respond to public health threats. Activities under the GHSA include:
a- Global Health Security Project (FAO)
USAID has a long-standing partnership with the United National Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This activity strengthens the animal health sector through zoonotic disease preparedness, surveillance, laboratory detection, response and AMR preparedness and response. This activity also supports improving animal laboratory systems, biosafety and biosecurity, and One Health workforce development.
b- THE EPIC PROJECT
The Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) initiative is a global health project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) spanning from 2019 to 2027. It’s funded by the Global Health Security (GHS) Program to bolster public health systems worldwide in prevention, detection, and response to infectious diseases. EpiC collaborates with local entities in line with GHS priorities, National Action Plans for Health Security (NAPHS), and USAID’s goals.
Led by FHI 360, EpiC partners with Right to Care (RTC), Palladium International, and Population Services International (PSI), engaging regional and local partners. The project offers top-tier technical assistance at various levels—community, facility, district, regional, and national—establishing partnerships with relevant entities tackling health security issues. Leveraging a diverse team of country-based experts, EpiC swiftly addresses programmatic, technical, and procurement issues.
The new funding will support four priority areas, including Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), biosafety and biosecurity (BSS), National Laboratory Systems, and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC).
c- Community Epidemics Pandemic Preparedness Program (CP3)
The Community Pandemic Preparedness Program implemented by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) strengthens the ability of communities, civil societies, and other partners to prevent, detect, and respond to disease threats and preparation for future risks. Over 1,500 Guinean Red Cross volunteers have been trained in Faranah Region on community-based surveillance and are capable of sensitizing and alerting suspicious cases of diseases such as rabies, anthrax, polio and measles to animal health and human health services.
d- Breakthrough Action
Breakthrough Action has a global reach and works in partnership with the local NGOs and communities to encourage people to adopt healthy behaviors such as using modern contraceptive methods, sleeping under bed nets, and preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases. USAID supported the development and diffusion of health promotion messages about COVID-19 vaccination focused on vulnerable populations, the importance of going to health centers, and the prevention management of measles, malaria, diarrheal diseases, and rabies.
f- Reaching Impact, Saturation, and Epidemic Control (RISE)
Provide Technical Assistance to support the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Global Fund COVID-19 Response Mechanism (GFATM C19RM) to provide a coordinated, comprehensive response, identifying and addressing existing barriers that may slow or prevent current implementation in the country.
