On Friday, September 24, the U.S. Embassy in Conakry announced the arrival of 336,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. This shipment of vaccines was delivered by COVAX, of which the United States is the leading contributor.
With this donation, the United States, with support from COVAX, has provided almost half a million vaccines to the people of Guinea since August. These donations reaffirm the Biden-Harris Administration’s pledge to ensure equitable access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines, and this is only the beginning.
As Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Steven Koutsis noted, “The United States is working with our partners to intensify the fight against COVID-19 around the world, pave the way for a global cure, and establish greater national and global health security.”
The United States’ commitment to the people of Guinea remains steadfast. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided over $5.5 million to improve health systems throughout the country. Whether it be through programming, technical assistance, or COVID-19 vaccine donations, the Unites States remains the largest bilateral donor in the Guinean health sector over the past 20 years.
Together with our global partners, the United States will continue to support the Guinean people’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
