Port-au-Prince, May 2, 2024 - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) was pleased to support Haiti’s Direction Departementale Agricole du Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR) and the American University of the Caribbean in Les Cayes (AUC) in organizing two agricultural fairs in Les Cayes from April 28 to May 1, 2024, and Hinche from May 1 to May 2, 2024 for Labor and Agricultural Day.
Through the Feed the Future program, a U.S. presidential initiative to combat hunger and food security worldwide, USAID is working with the Haitian government, universities, farmer organizations, and the private sector to increase agricultural productivity in Haiti. At these fairs, these USAID partners showcased innovative activities, products, and the solutions they are working on: MARNDR, AUC, the Feed the Future Haiti Resilience and Agriculture Sector Advancement activity, the Project for the Support and Increased Profitability of the Livestock Sector, and the Haitian Agricultural University Partnership.
USAID works with Haitian farmers in thirty-five communes in the North, Northeast, Central, and South departments to increase production of key food security and export crops, provide economic opportunities to all including youth and women, and ensure farmers’ access to profitable markets. These projects develop more inclusive and resilient markets for rice, vegetables, corn, cassava and livestock. They also provide training and extension services to address climate change mitigation, adaptation, and the production of safe, nutritious food, while preserving natural resources.
“USAID is proud to partner with Haitian farmers to increase the supply of nutritious, locally grown crops while building self-reliant communities and resilient inclusive market systems,’’ said Jennifer Link, USAID Mission Director.
USAID recognizes the organizers of the fairs for their commitment to sustainable and resilient agriculture in Haiti.
