Development Challenge

  • Three years of active conflict
  • Yemen is 28th on USAID Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) needs index
  • WHO reports more than 2 million suspected cholera cases from October 2016 to August 2019, with a fatality rate of 0.18 percent (3,716 related deaths)
  • Over 15.7 million people (more than half of the population) have limited or no access to health services or safe water
  • Fuel shortages completely disrupt water service in some areas

USAID Approach

  • Improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation for the most vulnerable populations
  • Strengthen capacity of WASH institutions and service providers to sustainably operate and manage services and facilities
  • Promote awareness of hygiene practices, innovative water-saving methodologies at the household level, and sustainable water resource management in agriculture

Impact

  • Provided nearly 75,000 beneficiaries access to clean drinking water and improved sanitation services through the rehabilitation of water schemes and sewer networks in Sana’a and Taiz governorates
  • Supported prevention of disease outbreaks (cholera, dengue, and typhoid)
  • Reached more than 11,200 individuals through hygiene awareness sessions, including cholera prevention, water quality surveillance, and handwashing
