Press Release

Active citizens of Burana Municipality of Chuy oblast came together to address the most pressing issues in their communities. With support from USAID’s Jigerduu Jarandar project a group of local active citizens helped improve street lighting in Burana village and construct a new children's playground in Don-Aryk village.

The village of Burana, a popular tourist site and home to 800 residents, did not have street lights. A group of active community members have worked together to address this public safety concern. They raised 117,000 KGS from residents and local businesses to install street lighting, while the local government allocated more than 300,000 KGS. The USAID’s Jigerduu Jarandar project helped with community mobilization training, legal consultations, and the purchase of street lighting equipment worth about 380,000 KGS.
“At night, we used to walk around with flashlights in our hands, but now it is bright everywhere. It’s also great for our children who go to schools in neighboring villages. Moreover, we’re seeing almost no livestock theft since the lights were installed. It was very common before,” said Nurlan Komuchiev, the former head of the Burana Aiyl Okmotu.

In Don-Aryk, resident’s main concern was lack of a safe, modern playground for more than 1,000 of local children. The local initiative group raised over 300,000 KGS from the citizens. The local government provided 2,000,000 KGS and allocated 12 acres of municipal land for the new playground. Other important contributors were the Chui Regional Development Fund and Chui Forestry. USAID Jigerduu Jarandar project has purchased a playground set - sandboxes, bars, swings, and benches for 1,000,000 KGS.
“I salute the local self government, private businesses, and individual citizens for your contributions. We will continue to support communities and the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic to come together to address the issues that are of concern to citizens,” said Andrew Maybrook, the USAID/Kyrgyz Republic Program Office Director.
