ANTANANARIVO – The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), provided high-performance computer servers and other state-of-the-art Information Technology equipment to the Ministry of Public Health.

This contribution will make the health information system more effective by integrating data and allowing the Ministry to unify data across districts, regions, and nationally to make evidence-based and informed decision-making when responding rapidly to epidemics.

The equipment, valued at $111,500 (507 million ariary), will help the Ministry and stakeholders manage the country’s health information system to improve the health of the Malagasy people.

“Thanks to this equipment, the Ministry of Health will be better equipped to face the challenges of public health and improve the quality of care provided to the Malagasy population,” Sophia Brewer, Director of USAID’s Office of Health, Population, and Nutrition, said at the event.  “This support is not only a material gesture, but also a symbol of hope and confidence in the future for Madagascar.”

The USAID ACCESS project procured the equipment that will transform the health information system. Support for the Ministry of Health to move forward with modern digital technology also goes hand in hand with the use of the CommCare platform, a mobile application that supports community workers in their health service delivery and improves data reporting.

This assistance includes state-of-the-art software that will help inform decision-making and improve epidemiological surveillance.  The equipment will also help improve the functionality of ACCESS-University, an e-learning tool that USAID supports, that provides continuous professional development opportunities to health workers across the country.

The United States stands side by side with Madagascar to help improve the health and well-being of the Malagasy people.  Through USAID, the U.S. government remains the largest bilateral partner to Madagascar’s health sector having provided $72 million in support to health priorities in 2022.
