The influence of Mongolia’s authoritarian neighbors, coupled with relatively new democratic institutions, threaten the country’s democratic future. USAID helps sustain hard-won democratic gains by building a more effective, accountable, and responsive government. Programs strengthen civic organizations, increase citizen engagement with their national and local governments, and increase the ability of journalists and media organizations to conduct quality reporting and combat misinformation. USAID also works with youth, women, and men in Mongolia to advocate for more from their government, strengthen civic education, and expand opportunities for women and youth.
PROJECTS
Digital Accelerator Asia
The Digital Asia Accelerator, managed by USAID’s Regional Development Mission for Asia, promotes cybersecurity, digital upskilling, and digital policies that advance more open, inclusive, and free digital economies. In Mongolia, USAID is increasing citizens’ capacities to use digital technology safely and effectively through innovative methods such as the “Only Mine” cybersecurity awareness raising campaign. This activity used creative music campaigns to raise citizens’ awareness of cybersecurity threats and how to stay safe online. USAID also promotes women’s participation in the cybersecurity workforce, trains women journalists on how to report on cybersecurity issues, and fosters a public-private sector digital policy advocacy network to promote harmonized, transparent, and business-friendly digital trade policies.
Media and Civil Society Strengthening
The Media and Civil Society Strengthening project will empower Mongolian actors to ensure the nation’s vibrant democracy grows even stronger and more resilient through empowered civic organizations that are supported by a professional and unbiased media. USAID will help non-governmental organizations - primarily outside of Ulaanbaatar - to strengthen citizen engagement with their local and national governments. USAID will also support initiatives that increase journalists' and media organizations' skills to conduct quality, wide-ranging, publicly accessible reporting and combat misinformation.
