On November 6, Administrator Samantha Power met with UN Assistant Secretary-General for Development Coordination Oscar Fernandez-Taranco.

Today, Administrator Samantha Power spoke with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres about humanitarian responses to urgent crises in Sudan and Gaza, the detention of aid workers in Yemen, and developments in Somalia and Haiti. 

The United States, through USAID, announced it provided an additional $26.7 million to the Global Financing Facility (GFF) in a continued push to support health workers and advance primary health care. The announcement will be highlighted on the sidelines of next week’s GFF 19th Investors’ Group meeting and Trust Fund Committee meeting in Abuja, Nigeria. This funding will strengthen country and global efforts to increase access to resilient, responsive, and sustainable primary health care and health workforces. 

On October 31, Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman participated in the annual Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue hosted by the World Food Prize Foundation in Des Moines, Iowa to highlight the U.S. government’s ongoing commitment to boosting food security and economic growth in Africa.

Each November at USAID, we recognize Native American Heritage Month. This month is a time to celebrate the rich culture and the vast contributions of Native American and Indigenous persons like Deer, who have helped push to make our nation’s core values of liberty and justice for all a lived reality, for their own communities, and for others in the United States and beyond. 

Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with Raed Al Saleh, Founder and Head of Syria Civil Defence, popularly known as the White Helmets.

Today, USAID announced the release of the new 2024 Nothing Without Us: USAID Disability Policy. There are more than 1.3 billion persons with disabilities around the world – 80 percent of whom live in low- and middle-income countries. Any issue that affects humans – climate change, hunger, disease – often disproportionately affects persons with disabilities. Intentional, sustainable, and meaningful inclusion of persons with disabilities in all areas of USAID’s work is therefore no longer an option – it is essential to realize our potential and meet our development goals.

Today, the United States Agency for International Development announced a new project that will strengthen the capacity of our partner countries to prevent, detect, and respond to the increasing occurrence and severity of epidemics, pandemics, and novel infectious disease threats.  

Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman will travel to Des Moines, Iowa to participate in the 2024 Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue, hosted by the World Food Prize Foundation.

The United States, through USAID, committed $57.4 million, working with Congress, to accelerate food security initiatives and advance novel climate-smart agricultural solutions to reduce global hunger, poverty, and undernutrition. Announced at the 2024 World Food Prize Borlaug Dialogue in Iowa, more than $38 million will support Feed the Future – the U.S. government’s global hunger initiative - Innovation Labs.

Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with the World Bank Executive Director for Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Sri Lanka Param Iyer to discuss coordination on several high-level development priorities, including USAID and the World Bank’s work to mitigate the harmful effects of lead exposure. 

On October 21-24, Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman traveled to Italy to engage with partner countries on critical development priorities. While in Rome, she led a roundtable discussion, hosted by the U.S. Mission to the UN Rome-based agencies, with implementing partners and other donor countries about food delivery to the people of Sudan. The event highlighted humanitarian access challenges and other persistent bureaucratic impediments hindering the delivery of life-saving assistance.

Today, as we mark International Religious Freedom Day, we recognize the courage of those people throughout history – and among us today – who have fought against persecution or discrimination on the basis of religion or belief. 

From October 23 through 25, Acting Deputy Administrator Michele Sumilas participated in various engagements during the World Bank Annual Meetings. Throughout the week, she engaged USAID’s partners on shared priorities, including boosting food security and climate action, as well as collaborating on humanitarian assistance.

Today, Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman met with Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko to reaffirm USAID’s commitment to helping Ukraine meet its urgent financing needs, including through the G7 loans announced this week. 

Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Tony Blair to discuss cooperation between USAID and the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI). Administrator Power and former Prime Minister Blair discussed TBI's longstanding partnership with Power Africa and progress on rural electrification and other shared priorities aimed at improving access to affordable and reliable electricity in sub-Saharan Africa.

Today, Administrator Samantha Power was in Phnom Penh for the second day of her visit to Cambodia. She met with Prime Minister Hun Manet at the Peace Palace, where they discussed the U.S. and Cambodia’s shared interest in fostering a deeper bilateral relationship. Noting that her visit marked the first time a USAID Administrator had traveled to Cambodia, Administrator Power recognized the significant progress achieved through collaboration between USAID and the Government of Cambodia in areas such as health, education, and environmental protection.
