Administrator Samantha Power speaks about the success and expansion of m-mama, an innovative emergency referral system that swiftly transports pregnant women and newborns facing complications to appropriate healthcare facilities. m-mama has been shown to contribute to a 38 percent decrease in the number of maternal deaths in pilot locations in Africa. With support from USAID, Vodafone Foundation and other partners, the m-mama approach to enhance maternal and newborn health is being pioneered by the Government of Kenya and will soon be available for Tanzania’s entire population of 60 million.
