USAID reinforces the foundations of good governance by encouraging all citizens — inclusive of women, youth and other marginalized groups — to participate in democratic processes more equitably. USAID also promotes government accountability and transparency by encouraging citizen engagement and implementation of effective policies. USAID prioritizes the empowerment and protection of marginalized populations, with a focus on women and girls, who are increasingly vulnerable to gender-based violence (GBV) and human trafficking. USAID will support governments, communities, and other key actors to be responsive to the unique needs of women; pay particular attention to boosting their skills; improve their access to and control of resources; increase their political and social representation; and improve prosecution, protection, and prevention efforts to combat GBV and human trafficking in the region.
