The USAID partnership with Asociación Benéfica PRISMA contributes to the implementation of the National COVID-19 vaccination Plan in Peru.
This Alliance will support the formulation and revision of plans, the coordination among stakeholders, the supply chain management with focus on cold chain, vaccines management, the surveillance of adverse events attributable to the vaccine, community engagement and participation, vaccine demand, and communications and advocacy. It will have a strategy focused on contributing to achieve that indigenous communities and other vulnerable populations receive the vaccine with equity.
HOW DOES THE ACTIVITY WORK?
The project supports the Ministry of Health and subnational health authorities (regional and local) in the implementation of the National COVID-19 Vaccination Plan, with an effectiveness approach from the planning stages through the identification and reporting of adverse events post-vaccination for their attention by the health system to ensure that the people of Peru, above all that neglected such as the indigenous, is vaccinated in optimal conditions and in the shortest possible time. Technical assistance and training will be provided in the Regions of Ancash, Cusco, Cajamarca, Junín, Huancavelica, Ayacucho, Lambayeque, Piura and Ucayali to support the formulation and implementation of regional vaccination plans, strengthen the management of vaccine logistics, improve services at vaccination points, support follow-up of vaccinated persons, strengthen regional communication strategies and the participation of community-based organizations.
RESULTS ACHIEVED
- 5 regional vaccination plans in the process of continuous updating.
- 5 vaccination plans for high Andean and indigenous peoples developed, three of them are included in the regional plans and two of them have been prepared independently.
- 5 communication plans aligned with the MIDIS and MINCUL national plans.
- Two training events were held for the National Training Program for Vaccination against COVID 19 developed by the National School of Public Health. The first event was held for health personnel in the field of intervention in which 760 people participated, and 84% were certified.
- In the event held, a total of 1877 people were trained, of which 720 are from the project's scope of intervention and 80% of them will be certified.
- A total of 6,857 health workers trained in micro planning with a territorial approach, cold chain, vaccination services and pharmacovigilance. Of this total, 23% were men and 77% women.
- There were 329 visits for technical assistance and monitoring of processes and 375 work meetings and various coordination.
- Four private sector organizations supporting the implementation of regional vaccination plans: Antamina and SiderPerú (in Ancash), Chamber of Commerce (in Lambayeque) and the University of Piura (in Piura).
- On July 9, the "National Training Program for Vaccination against COVID 19" will begin, which has been updated and reinforced jointly by the National School of Public Health.
- Coordination with the Legacy Project (national logistics operator for vaccines against COVID-19) to collaborate in the logistics management of vaccines in the five prioritized regions.
- A digital platform: website of the project called “I get vaccinated now” with content in 3 native Quechua languages, Ashaninka is under development.
- 21 culturally appropriate audio spots produced collaboratively with local entities, in Spanish and native languages (Machiguenga, Shipibo Konibo, Katataibo, Asheninka, and Kakataibo).
- The videos on the importance of vaccines disseminated through Facebook have been viewed 2,039,297 times, reaching 589,109 people in the 5 regions. These videos were segmented by specific zones and ages.
- 38,038 messages have been disseminated through radio spots and microprograms, mentions in radio programs, broadcasting of peripherals and other media.
- 105,000 sticky comics have been printed, as well as 10,000 utility booklets with a message about the importance of the second dose that are being distributed in Ucayali and the Amazon area of Cusco.
- Coordination meetings with authorities and technical teams from the Health Directorates for the regions of Huancavelica, Cajamarca, Junín and Ayacucho.
