  • More than 7300 metric tons of solid waste have been safely managed.
  • It is estimated that more than 790 metric tons of plastic, equivalent to 85 million plastic bottles, have been prevented from contaminating the oceans.

Close to 6,000 households and 580 commercial businesses are participating in enhanced solid waste management and recycling programs as a result of activities by the United States Government in Peru. This outcome was made possible by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which implemented the Clean Cities, Blue Ocean (CCBO) project in the cities of Máncora, Paita, and Pisco since 2021.

With a comprehensive approach and sustainable waste management practices, CCBO has promoted inclusive growth while respecting gender equity. It facilitated collaborative work among local authorities, beneficiaries, and private companies.

"We are proud of the work done with the local governments of Máncora, Paita, and Pisco to promote the practice of the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle), improve waste management systems, and strengthen the recycling supply chain," stated Ellee Bosman, Deputy Director of USAID in Peru. "Currently, close to 6,000 households and 580 commercial businesses are participating in enhanced solid waste management and recycling programs as a result of our program activities and partnerships with local governments. In this way, we estimate that we prevented over 7300 metric tons of solid waste from reaching and contaminating the ocean," she emphasized.

Additionally, the program empowered over 500 women in personal skills, financial education, and business management, resulting in more than 180 developing circular economy business plans.

The program promotes economic revitalization and environmental protection by strengthening recycling infrastructure, promoting sustainable behaviors, and providing technical assistance to consolidate the partnership of recyclers and improve their marketing chain, always in coordination with the local government.

"We express our sincerest gratitude to USAID for their support in recent years to improve our solid waste management system in the cities of Máncora, Paita, and Pisco through the Clean Cities, Blue Ocean program," stated Edgar Romero, Deputy Minister of Environmental Management at the Ministry of Environment. "Our dedication to combating plastic pollution in the oceans remains steadfast, ensuring a healthier environment for future generations."

The event was attended by representatives of local governments, who highlighted the positive impact of the program on their communities and reaffirmed their commitment to continue working on sustainable waste management.

"The Clean Cities, Blue Ocean Program has transformed our community, strengthening capacities to manage waste sustainably. We are committed to continuing this important work," emphasized Manuel Cruz, Mayor of the District of Máncora.
