The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) advances high-potential, high-impact energy technologies that are too early for private-sector investment. ARPA-E awardees are unique because they are developing entirely new ways to generate, store, and use energy. ARPA-E projects have the potential to radically improve U.S. economic prosperity, national security, and environmental well being. We focus on transformational energy projects that can be meaningfully advanced with a small amount of funding over a defined period of time. Our streamlined awards process enables us to act quickly and catalyze cutting-edge areas of energy research.

The African Renewable Energy Fund (AREF) targets investments in small to medium size energy generation projects that generate energy from the following renewable and clean energy sources: hydro, wind, solar, and biomass projects, certain geothermal projects and certain stranded natural gas projects. In addition, the Fund focuses on building technical and financial capacity of the local developers it partners with to enable them to roll out additional power projects to meet the growing demand for energy resulting from increasing urbanization and economic growth.

The purpose of the AREF Project Support Facility is to provide a range of assistance to support the development of renewable energy projects that fall within the AREF's Investment Policy, including energy resource assessment, socio-economic environmental studies, technical activities, legal due diligence, and training and mentoring of local staff.
