Maternal and Child Survival: A Decade of Progress and Action for the Future

On March 21, 2023 USAID along with the UNICEF, and the Governments of India, Senegal, and the United Kingdom hosted the Maternal and Child Survival: A Decade of Progress and Action for the Future event in Washington, DC commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 2012 Child Survival Call to Action
Administrator Samantha Power provided opening remarks, unveiling Preventing Child and Maternal Deaths: A Framework for Action in a Changing World, 2023-2030, USAID's new strategic framework that chronicles the progress made across 25 countries since 2012, and lays out an action plan for country-led programs to measurably improve health outcomes for women and children through an intensified focus on coverage, quality, and equity of health care services. Other distinguished speakers at the event included: Dr. Atul Gawande, USAID Assistant Administrator; Dr. Ashok Babu, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India; Dr. Amadou Doucoure, Director of Mother and Child Health, Ministry of Health and Social Action, Government of Senegal; Catherine Russell, Executive Director, UNICEF; and The Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell, Minister of State, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Government of the United Kingdom.
The event was broadcast globally via a live webcast with over 3,200 virtual participants. A number of USAID partner countries used this as an opportunity to host their own watch parties and events, including Bangladesh, Ethiopia Kenya, Nigeria, and South Sudan. Satellite events planned in Malawi and Nepal will occur later this year.
