SOCIAL SERVICES - EDUCATION AND HEALTH

Three decades of conflict nearly destroyed Somalia’s education and health systems, which are characterized by poor quality, insufficient access, and inadequate resources. As a result, nearly 85 percent of children are not enrolled in school and an estimated 692 women die of pregnancy-related causes per 100,000 live births. USAID has partnered with federal and state-level education ministries to establish quality education standards and expand access to education for 150,000 out-of-school children and youth. In the health sector, USAID provides technical assistance to the federal and state-level health ministries to strengthen maternal and child survival policies and supports midwife training and increases women's access to services to improve maternal health.

Education and Health Portfolio:

Accelerated Education Activity (AEA)
Partner: CARE
Estimated Cost: $30 million / 2024 - 2029

USAID’s new Accelerated Education Activity (AEA) will support over 67,000 out-of-school children and youth (including 54% girls and 10% children with disabilities) to access accelerated education. USAID will improve learning outcomes, strengthen ownership of education, and continue to build the government’s capacity to oversee the delivery of education to marginalized children and youth. The activity will prepare children and youth for further education, employment or entrepreneurship opportunities.

Maternal Health Activity
Partner: UNFPA / 2023 - 2027

In the health sector, USAID is improving maternal health by supporting midwife training and increasing women's access to health services. Through this program, USAID will train and promote employment of 130 midwives, thereby increasing livelihood opportunities while also ensuring safer conditions for mothers and their infants.
