Somalia's coastline is the longest in continental Africa and boasts untapped resources for economic growth, including diverse fish species. Through the Growth, Enterprise, Employment, and Livelihoods (GEEL) project, USAID has supported more than 50 Somali fishing companies to stabilize catch rates, improve economic return, and streamline internationally-accepted processing and hygiene standards through technical assistance, trainings, and export market linkages. GEEL is also working with government authorities to codify fisheries management best practices and to facilitate sustainable co-investments in the fish sector to create jobs and livelihoods for fisherfolk, including women and youth.
