Dushanbe, Tajikistan, October 8, 2021 – Over the course of the last five years, USAID, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tajikistan, donated 1.3 million books in the Tajiki and Russian languages to children across Tajikistan though the “Read with Me” project, which helped to improve literacy and overall education in 80 percent of the country’s schools.

Implemented from 2016 to 2021 in partnership with the Ministry of Education, USAID’s flagship education program “Read with Me” improved teaching and reading outcomes in Tajik schools by providing books, education materials, teacher training, new technologies, and innovations such as radio and TV education programs.  The project trained 28,000 teachers on innovative pedagogical techniques who improved reading outcomes of 665,000 primary students.  Additionally, the project organized 28 summer camps, which involved 115 schools and promoted reading among 4,165 schoolchildren.  The project also distributed 7,200 children’s books in braille for children with vision impairment.

The U.S. government has provided over $100 million in support of education for schoolchildren in Tajikistan, primarily through training and educational materials in the Tajik and Russian languages.  With this sustained commitment to improving literacy in Tajikistan, the United States has made the largest contribution to support the government in strengthening the education reforms in primary education in the country.
