Summary
USAID’s support for aquaculture will increase fish farmer resilience and livelihoods by scaling freshwater tilapia production. The key activities are to 1) transition subsistence producers to commercial-scale fish production; 2) introduce integrated agriculture-aquaculture systems; 3) link production groups to local supply chains; and 4) develop harvest, post-harvest and distribution protocols and arrangements. With supplemental funding from USAID, partner World Fish will scale-up work currently funded by the Government of New Zealand to strengthen the fish supply chain, create enterprises and jobs, and to improve the nutritious status of consumers.
Expected Activities and Outcomes
The overall expected outcome of the activity is enhanced food and nutrition security while improving livelihoods of rural households through development of a sustainable aquaculture value chain. This will be accomplished by the following interventions:
- Increasing availability of fish by supporting fish hatcheries, feed and grow-out technologies and improved access to technical assistance.
- Increasing small businesses access to high quality inputs and technology through expanded private sector networks.
- Increasing accessibility of fish by strengthening the fish supply chain ensuring consistent supply of fresh fish and safe fish products.
- Increasing consumption of fish by Timorese households with consumer outreach on preparing diverse, nutritious meals.
