On May 17-19 USAID’s Rule of Law Partnership program conducted a training to support the formulation of a long-term strategic plan for the Supreme Judicial Council. The training was attended by representatives of the Supreme Judicial Council and the Supreme School of Judges.
“An independent judiciary is critical to holding the government accountable and giving citizens confidence that their cases will be decided impartially and in accordance with the law,” stated Susan Fine, Acting Mission Director, USAID Uzbekistan.
“USAID’s Rule of Law Partnership Program, implemented by the UNDP, supports the Supreme Judicial Council to increase judicial integrity and the transparency and accessibility of judicial information. It also helps to improve the Council’s coordination with other judicial institutions,” she added.
The Supreme Judicial Council was first formed in 2017 with the purpose of enhancing the independence of Uzbekistan’s courts as a means of ensuring the rule of law and access to justice for all citizens.
“The Supreme Judicial Council is an essential institution for ensuring that judges and courts are independent, ethical and efficient in the process of delivering justice, and as such, its effective operation is critical for protecting rule of law and further strengthening access to justice,” stated Matilda Dimovska, UNDP Resident Representative in Uzbekistan.
The Council’s strategic plan will serve to specify the direction of its activities within the framework of Uzbekistan’s on-going judicial reform process.
