Press Release

The United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has announced an additional $45.5 million in assistance to the East Jerusalem Hospital Network (EJHN) as it continues to provide essential and life-saving care to tens of thousands of Palestinians.

“The EJHN has been instrumental in providing quality healthcare to thousands of Palestinian patients across the West Bank and Gaza.  This additional funding underscores our commitment to the health and well-being of the Palestinian people,” said Amy Tohill-Stull, Mission Director of the USAID/West Bank and Gaza Mission. “By addressing the financial, technical, and operational challenges faced by the East Jerusalem Hospital Network, we are reinforcing the healthcare infrastructure that is critical to the communities we serve.”

This funding fulfills the $100 million commitment for the EJHN announced by President Joseph R. Biden during his visit to the region in July 2022. It will ensure ongoing access to critical care by providing $27 million in direct debt relief to the hospitals and $18.5 million to bolster long-term sustainability of member hospitals through rehabilitation and renovation of healthcare facilities, capital investments, equipment purchases, specialized training, and technical assistance.

Amid the region’s ongoing challenges, USAID remains dedicated to partnering with local institutions to promote stability and development. With this assistance, USAID will help strengthen the EJHN's ability to sustainably deliver essential services, maintain operations during challenging times, and ensure that families can receive the care they need. This assistance builds on USAID’s historic levels of support to EJHN, amounting to over $202 million since 2014 and will help the hospitals achieve financial independence by increasing revenue streams, expanding their client base and adopting more efficient practices.
