USAID increases access to clean water and improves wastewater management in both the West Bank and Gaza. USAID increases household connections to safe drinking water, improves hygiene practices, and strengthens disaster preparedness. These efforts improve human health, environmental health, and quality of life for Palestinians in vulnerable communities.
USAID is currently doing this through the following activities:
Jericho Water and Sanitation (WASH) Project
$19 million • Implemented by APCO/ARCON Construction & Services • 2023-2025
In Jericho, the wastewater collection and conveyance system serves more than 15,000 people who live in the municipality. This project will expand the sewer collection and conveyance system and construct 2,200 household connections to increase access to safely managed sanitation services for the residents of Jericho City, provide approximately 500,000 cubic meters per year of additional non-conventional climate resilient resources for irrigation, and protect the environment and the limited water resources from contamination. It will also expand solar energy use for a cost-effective source of reliable power for the Jericho wastewater treatment plant, allowing the plant to fully operate on clean energy.
Effective Management of Irrigation Water Activity
$36 million • Implemented by Farmer to Farmer LWA/Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture • 2023-2025
The Effective Management of Irrigation Water Activity (EMIW) strengthens the sustainability of groundwater resources. EMIW works with more than 22,000 local farmers and stakeholders in the West Bank and Gaza to introduce new technologies that reduce water use in irrigation, install clean energy equipment, and decrease reliance on fertilizers and other agrochemicals. By reducing the amount of water used and adopting better agricultural practices, USAID enables farmers to adapt to a world with fewer water resources.
Gaza Household WASH Activity
$9 million • Implemented by Global Communities • 2021-2024
The Gaza Household WASH activity increases access to facilities, including sewage pump stations, water wells, and water desalination plants, and services for safe domestic water, improving household and community sanitation, and enhancing emergency preparedness.
Tulkarem Wastewater Collection System Improvements
$14 million • Implemented by the Morganti Group Inc. • 2023-2025
The Tulkarem Wastewater Collection System Improvements project expands and improves the current wastewater collection system for the City of Tulkarem, adding new sewer pipelines to underserved areas and upgrading the pump station. Wastewater will be diverted to oxidation ponds, eliminating the Tulkarem City flow of two million cubic meters of untreated wastewater per year into an open stream, which is currently posing public health and environmental risks, social unrest, and political instability. The new collection system increases access to safely managed wastewater services for over 70,000 people.
Non-Revenue Water Management Project
$46 million • Implemented by Tetra Tech ARD • 2023-2027
The Non-Revenue Water Management Project improves access to water services in the Southern districts of the West Bank (Hebron, Halhul, and Dura). To strengthen communities and improve water security, the project reduces water losses by saving two million cubic meters of non-revenue water each year. This improves access to water for approximately 150,000 people and strengthens the technical and financial sustainability of water utilities.
