Thousands of Yemeni families in Aden now enjoy reliable electricity and better neighborhood relations thanks to the Nagi Community Enhancement Committee, Public Electricity Corporation (PEC), the Nagi Electricity Rehabilitation Project (NERP), and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

USAID’s Yemen Communities Stronger Together program is implemented by Global Communities and has worked through NERP to help the community rehabilitate and upgrade its power utility grid by supplying equipment and materials for three new electrical substations, replacing a standard transformer with a unit with twice the power, rehabilitating five low-voltage networks, and establishing two new low-voltage networks.

PEC carried out the installation and covered excavation and labor costs. District authorities also provided funds to construct the concrete substation foundations and two transformers. Local authorities estimate that the project will serve six neighborhoods with a population of over 15,000.

“This project represents a real opportunity for this area. We received support that we never dreamed of, both from PEC and from the community. We thank the project, the organization, the local authority, the community committees, and citizens who contributed to making the project a success,”’ said PEC’s Maged Al-Mansouri at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by the District Manager’s Social Affairs Advisor, Fahmy Al-Danaba and Electricity and Power Advisor, Wajeeh Mohamed Abdullah.

The USAID project improved relationships among residents and with local authorities which allowed everyone to collectively address deteriorating electricity services strained by new housing demands. USAID has supported 23 community-based projects through the Yemen Communities Stronger Together program.
