In 2018, USAID announced the launch of The Global Accelerator to End TB. This important initiative focuses on leveraging additional resources from countries, private-sector partners, and other local organizations to meet the UN target of treating 40 million infected people by 2022. In Zambia, USAID supports the Global Accelerator through the Eradicate Tuberculosis project  (ETB).

Working in partnership with the Government of Zambia, the National TB Control Program, the private sector, and other partners, ETB implements a comprehensive package of services aimed at strengthening the availability and quality of TB prevention, diagnostics, and treatment services. USAID Eradicate TB supports the Zambian Government’s goal of reducing TB-related mortality by 50 percent in the targeted provinces by 2022.

ETB works across 63 districts, targeting high TB-burden communities, people living with HIV, children, and individuals living in congregate settings such as prisons. In an effort to increase the number of individuals screened and tested while improving treatment success rates, ETB offers the following interventions:

  • Capacity-building of healthcare workers in TB case detection and management;
  • Strengthening of laboratory infrastructure and diagnostic techniques; and
  • Supporting TB operational research for improved program response.
  • Life of Project: May 2017 – September 2022
  • Location: Central, Copperbelt, Luapula, Northern, and North-western Provinces
  • Partners: Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH)
  • Chief of Party: Dr. Joseph Nikisi
  • USAID/PEPFAR Investment (Life of Project): $21.5 million

    JOURNEY TO SELF-RELIANCE

    USAID believes every person, every community, and every country wants to be empowered to lead their own future. We support self-reliance by walking alongside our friends on their development journey, as evolving but enduring partners.  As partners on this journey, we are empowering host country governments and our partners to achieve locally-sustained results, helping countries mobilize public and private revenues, strengthening local capacities, and accelerating enterprise-driven development.  This approach fosters stable, resilient, and prosperous countries that are more self-reliant, and prioritizes enduring partnerships.
