USAID’s Climate Readiness Plan outlines actions USAID is implementing across the Agency’s operations management functions and programs to adapt and increase USAID’s resilience to the effects of climate change.
Core actions in the Climate Readiness Plan include:
- Mainstreaming climate into USAID’s strategies, policies, processes, programming, and operations;
- Improving climate risk management implementation, accountability, and supply chain resilience;
- Enhancing climate staffing, training, and capacity building to ensure a climate-ready workforce; and
- Deploying a variety of tools and scientific data to ensure both climate-ready sites and facilities, as well as a climate-ready supply of mission-critical products and services.
USAID is implementing its Climate Readiness Plan through implementing the Special Objective of its Climate Strategy, “Do Our Part: Strengthen operations and approaches to programming to address climate change and further climate justice within USAID and our partner organizations.”
USAID published its Climate Readiness Plan on October 7, 2021, in response to Executive Order (E.O.) 14008, Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad, which instructed Federal Government agencies to take a wide range of actions to combat the climate crisis: from placing climate change at the center of U.S. foreign policy, to leveraging the Federal Government’s buying power, procurement policies, and real property management to support robust climate action.
USAID reports annually on its progress implementing the plan. USAID published its 2022 Progress Report on October 6, 2022.
