Press Release

Sharm el Sheikh – Today at COP27, the United States announced a $4 million solicitation for energy and climate-focused research grant proposals to develop transformative, multi-disciplinary solutions for Egypt’s energy sector through a USAID-funded research and exchange program called the Center of Excellence for Energy.

USAID Mission Director Leslie Reed joined the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Ayman Ashour, in announcing this new initiative.  Mission Director Reed said, “Innovative energy solutions are essential for countries to reduce their emissions.  The United States is delighted to support research that will generate local solutions for local challenges in Egypt and bring together some of the best minds in the energy sector from the United States and Egypt to unlock Egypt's potential for change.”

Minister Ashour remarked, “The Center of Excellence for Energy is a prime example of successful international academic partnership and collaboration. Through this $ 4 million investment in innovative applied research, U.S. and Egyptian researchers will be coming together to solve global challenges in the energy sector.”

The Center of Excellence for Energy program is implemented by Arizona State University in partnership with Ain Shams, Aswan, and Mansoura Universities.  U.S. grant funding through this initiative will support research by over 50 faculty and over 75 students from Egyptian partner universities and Arizona State University, as well as new research equipment, postgraduate and faculty exchanges, travel, and other research activities.

The United States is committed to cooperating with our global partners to achieve our shared climate goals.  To date, the United States, through USAID, has invested over $300 million (EGP 4.7 billion) to protect Egypt’s natural resources and build Egypt’s resilience to climate change.
