Talenta: Strengthening Indonesia's Digital Ecosystem

Context

Indonesia has seen a rapid rise in the number of people connected to the internet and utilizing new digital platforms. Workers who use advanced digital skills—such as cloud infrastructure and software development—contribute an estimated $129 million to Indonesia’s economy annually. In addition to attracting new investment into the country, digital platforms are increasingly transforming the economic and social lives of Indonesians.

Indonesian workers face increasing pressure to upskill digitally to take advantage of new opportunities, embrace higher-skilled jobs, bring new innovations to local or global markets, and solve challenges that will help improve the way people live and work. Indonesia needs a sharp increase in digital workers between 2015 and 2030. This demand is expected to grow with the rapid advancement of technology and increasing market demand for digitally-skilled workers.

The Acceleration of Indonesia’s Transformation to a Digital Economy by Improving Digital Talent (TALENTA)

Through TALENTA, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) works with leading cloud services provider Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Elitery, an Indonesian IT managed services provider, to accelerate Indonesia’s cloud-based digital transformation through workforce training and digital technology support for startups and small- and medium-enterprises.

TALENTA will strengthen Indonesia’s economy by preparing job-ready graduates and small- and medium-enterprises for the increasingly digital marketplace of the future. The program will be rolled out to universities, students, and startups. It will focus on working with universities to develop Indonesia’s cloud computing workforce by enhancing the digital skills of students, lecturers, and universities. The partnership with AWS and Elitery will also equip Indonesia’s startups with cloud digital technology training and facilitate technology adoption, provide support for innovation, and connect startups to potential investors.

Anticipated Results

The project aims to achieve the following results:

Train 60,000 students from 20 universities in cloud technology to keep up with market demand.
Equip 20 universities with cloud storage to support the learning management system and innovation of their digital workload.
Assist 100 startups to adopt cloud-based technology, preparing them to enter the market through business mentorship programs, and connecting them with potential investors.
