Context

Indonesia is committed to improving the quality and competitiveness of its workforce. Lembaga Pengelola Dana Pendidikan, the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), has an endowment of $6.6 billion to support Indonesian students to attend the world’s top universities for scholarship or research opportunities. The United States and Indonesia are collaborating to expand opportunities for Indonesia’s future leaders and professionals to attend U.S. universities and gain the skills needed to advance global prosperity.

Attending U.S. graduate and non-degree programs will strengthen the competitiveness of the Indonesian workforce. Presently, only 0.01 percent of Indonesia’s population benefit from an LPDP scholarship. LPDP works with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (MOECRT), the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MORA), and the National Research and Innovation Agency to increase the number of scholarship recipients.

USAID Technical and Management Support to the Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (USAID Teman LPDP)

USAID TEMAN LPDP supports Indonesian scholarship providers to enhance student success, strengthen Indonesia’s workforce, and improve access to quality education, in line with the Government of Indonesia’s objectives. To achieve this, USAID TEMAN LPDP provides technical assistance to enhance the management of LPDP-funded scholarship programs and actively facilitates collaboration with U.S. universities, opening doors for students to access higher education in the United States.

Through targeted outreach programs, USAID TEMAN LPDP promotes the value of U.S. higher education to Indonesian students, supporting their educational and professional goals. The activity partners with the MOECRT and MORA to establish a sustainable pathway program—including application guidance and personalized matching with universities—to improve students’ admission chances and facilitate a smooth transition to studying in the United States.

Results

To date, USAID TEMAN LPDP has:

  • Strengthened talent management in scholarship offices within the MOECRT and MORA through training, mentoring, and sharing sessions;
  • Established eight new partnerships between U.S. universities and the MOECRT and MORA to support Indonesian scholarship programs;
  • Piloted a pathway program for Indonesian teachers to study at top world universities, including in the United States; and
  • Assisted more than 200 Indonesian students to attend a U.S. university.
