OVERVIEW

USAID’s water and sanitation activity increases access to safe, inclusive, and responsive services through enhanced national and local service delivery in targeted governorates. This activity will build public service efficiency and strengthen Iraq’s climate resilience.

GOALS

Improve access to water and sanitation services: USAID supports local water directorates to plan and manage water services, and to improve coordination and information-sharing between provincial water management units to ensure availability of quality water services.

Promote digitized water management systems and other modernization measures: USAID improves water distribution and treatment facilities through enhanced infrastructure and technologies to increase water conservation.

Increase private sector engagement and investment in the water sector: USAID will support relevant government counterparts to expand engagement with the private sector.

Enable women and youth to promote climate adaptation and water conservation: USAID will engage local stakeholders, including community members, businesses, civil society organizations, and youth with decision-makers to foster improved delivery and accountability for water services.

EXPECTED IMPACT

  • Improved water and sanitation services for 2.5 million Iraqis.
  • Support for local authorities, private sector, civil society, and the citizenry to increase access to sustainable and safe water and sanitation services.
  • Government officials use real-time, accurate data to manage the water sector.
  • Behavioral, technology, and community engagement interventions improve sustained access to potable water and sanitation services.
  • Young people, especially girls, obtain green jobs in the water and sanitation sectors that foster their participation in the market economy.
