Astana, Kazakhstan, February 12, 2024 – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Central Asia is launching a four-year activity called “Participatory Governance – Shared Responsibility”. The activity will be implemented by Public Foundation Decenta to advance local governance by empowering citizens and building partnerships to prioritize local needs and interests.
In his welcoming speech at the launch event in Astana with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of National Economy, the Ministry of Industry and Construction, the Ministry of Culture and Information, local government experts, and civil society representatives, USAID Central Asia Mission Director Luis Rivera stated: “This activity will support President Tokayev’s reforms in local governance by empowering civil society organizations and local communities to effectively represent the rights and interests of citizens and improve the quality of local governance for effective work between government and citizens.”
USAID’s Participatory Governance Activity aims to provide support to rural districts by enhancing the efficiency of local budget planning. In addition, the activity will assist local government bodies to conduct functional reviews to facilitate the transparent and competitive transfer of government functions to the private sector or civil society. All this will improve the social contract system by implementing IT solutions and recommendations for the "Public Participation Budget" program.
USAID’s Participatory Governance activity is implemented by local organization Decenta and its partner at the national and local levels in four geographical focus areas in Kazakhstan: Pavlodar, West Kazakhstan, Ulytau, and Zhetysu regions.
