As the third Information Commissioner of Maldives, Ahid Rasheed facilitates citizens’ access to information and advances transparency by rigorously enforcing and enhancing compliance with the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Although the Act, ratified in 2014, was designed to bolster the constitutional right to information, it has not been fully implemented.
Under Commissioner Rasheed’s leadership, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) achieved significant progress. In his first year alone, the office resolved 176 cases, surpassing the total number of cases closed over the previous five years, despite the office not receiving additional resources. His strategic efforts have focused on working closely with state institutions, to address 75% of ICO’s access to information cases and fostering greater transparency in accordance with the law.
