OVERVIEW
USAID’s Global Health Security Activity-FAO, implemented in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), assists Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MOALD) to strengthen Nepal’s capacity to prevent, detect, and rapidly respond to emerging infectious disease (EID) threats using a “One Health” approach.
HIGHLIGHT
USAID’s Global Health Security Activity-FAO strengthens Nepal’s animal health system to reduce the risks and impacts of zoonoses, EIDs, antimicrobial resistance, and biothreats through a One Health and inclusive approach.
USAID Global health Security - FAO Strengthens Nepal’s national laboratory and surveillance system:
USAID supports strengthening of laboratory quality, testing capacity, specimen referral and transport, and early warning and surveillance systems across the animal health sector.
Supports antimicrobial resistance (AMR) prevention:
USAID supports AMR awareness through capacity building of professionals and farmers on the rational use of antibiotics. USAID also provides technical support to develop/update treatment guidelines promoting the rational use of antimicrobials in animals, and development of national guidelines for and piloting of antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary hospitals.
Supports biosafety and biosecurity (BSS):
USAID supports the development of a national BSS policy, improves coordination between human and animal health laboratories to improve BSS, and strengthens BSS measures in government-owned livestock farms.
