OVERVIEW
USAID MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership (MCGL) improves access to and quality of maternal and newborn health through scaling up the small and sick newborn (SSN) care model and strengthening maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) system.
HIGHLIGHT
USAID MCGL provides technical assistance to the Government of Nepal (GoN) to adapt the WHO-recommended standards of care for small and sick newborns to the Nepali context; train health workers in provincial hospitals to provide quality care; and improve MPDSR in Bagmati and Koshi Provinces.
USAID MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership Strengthens Bagmati and Koshi Provincial Hospitals to improve newborn care:
USAID trains clinical staff working in special newborn and intensive care units in provincial hospitals providing level II newborn care in Bagmati and Koshi provinces. The partnership also builds the capacity of hospitals to provide timely and appropriate referrals.
Supports the revision of guidelines and training materials for newborn care:
USAID partners with the Ministry of Health and Population’s Family Welfare Division (FWD) to adapt the WHO-recommended global guidance on newborn care.
Improves maternal care through MPDSR:
USAID supports training and mentoring to strengthen provincial hospitals in Bagmati and Koshi provinces in MPDSR. USAID engages health managers from municipality and provinces to train human resources, conduct regular data reviews, and develop action plans, leading to improved maternal health care.
Facilitates learning to improve health care training:
USAID partners with the FWD to pilot the implementation of infant and family centered developmental and post-discharge care models and based on the learning from the pilot, adapts existing level II small and sick newborn care training.
