OVERVIEW
USAID’s Small Project Assistance education grants with Peace Corps/Nepal is a collaboration that strengthens English language knowledge and communication skills among students in community schools. The project also promotes inclusive education systems at the local level.
HIGHLIGHT
USAID’s Small Project Assistance grants allow teachers to apply their experience in developing low—and no-cost teaching materials and learning games that improve their students’ English language skills. A recent survey of recipients indicated that 84 percent of teachers and 100 percent of school principals applied these skills and methods.
USAID Peace Corps EDO SPA Continues community development during COVID-19:
USAID supports local education priorities and develops transferable skills of participating community members. With USAID resources, Peace Corps Volunteers work with communities to design and implement small-scale, community-driven projects during their service. While awaiting the physical return of volunteers to Nepal in 2023, Peace Corps/Nepal staff continued providing technical support for communities during the COVID-19 pandemic using in-person and virtual platforms. The 11 Education Volunteers arrived in July 2023.
Strengthens educational institutions:
USAID supported training throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to mitigate its risks and impacts on education access and quality. School principals and municipal education section chiefs implemented many COVID-19 risk mitigation measures and methods for safer supervising and supporting school staff during the crisis.
Promotes skills development:
USAID promoted the design and use of low-cost materials to English teachers trained in communicative language. This approach promoted the avoidance of unconscious biases, critical thinking skills, and access to English language resources. The interventions helped establish and strengthen education practitioners' networks across six districts to share field-informed approaches.
