OVERVIEW

USAID Local Works: Gorkha and Chitwan is providing local awards to enable marginalized communities to better respond to and recover from the impacts of COVID-19 and potential future shocks. These awards reduce the risks of families falling back into poverty and make them more resilient to today’s world.

HIGHLIGHT

USAID Local Works: Gorkha and Chitwan increase household incomes through expanding, exploring, and diversifying livelihood opportunities. The activity includes farm and agriculture sector interventions for 1,000 marginalized women, girls, and their START families.

USAID Local Works promotes locally-led solutions:

To effectively meet the needs of Nepal’s most vulnerable and marginalized populations, USAID helps them manage risks by assisting them to develop solutions that work for them, such as providing local cooperatives with credit to support migrant returnees. As solutions are implemented, the impacted groups can rebound from shocks more quickly and build a path to future prosperity without backsliding with each new disaster or crisis.

USAID Local Works engages marginalized communities:

After identifying at-risk groups, USAID Local Works engages with them to better understand the power dynamics of each household, community, and beyond. USAID uses this knowledge to guide at-risk groups when they are exploring solutions to issues within a holistic environment.

USAID Local Works reduces the causes of vulnerability:

USAID helps vulnerable and marginalized populations strengthen their local networks. USAID Local Works supports these populations to participate and address the systemic barriers they regularly encounter.

USAID Local Works strengthens stakeholders:

USAID Local Works identifies and promotes stakeholder participation in decisions that impact government service delivery and local planning processes. This approach supports marginalized people through locally-led solutions.
