Today, USAID Administrator Samantha Power attended meetings and events during her second day at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, New York.

In a meeting with President of Moldova Maia Sandu, Administrator Power reiterated USAID’s support for the government’s reform agenda and efforts to advance anti-corruption commitments. President Sandu and Administrator Power discussed Moldova’s energy outlook and ongoing initiatives to enhance the country’s energy security.

Administrator Power then met with the Vice President of Tanzania, Philip Mpango. They discussed the close partnership between the United States and Tanzania, and USAID’s partnerships in the country to advance progress in health, education, economic growth, and democracy and governance.

Administrator Power hosted USAID’s flagship “Democracy Delivers” event(link is external), which brought together leaders and representatives from countries experiencing democratic openings with leaders from the private sector and foundations. During the event, participants discussed opportunities to build new partnerships that will help democracy deliver for citizens. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and CEO of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation Scott Nathan joined Administrator Power, along with leaders and government officials from Armenia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Malawi, Moldova, Nepal, Tanzania, and Zambia.

During the event, USAID and the Vodafone Foundation committed $15 million to expand the coverage of a maternal health emergency transportation system in Tanzania from two districts (home to about 1 million people) to Tanzania’s entire population of 60 million people. The announcement was in direct response to Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s request for help to bring the initiative to the entire country. Vodafone Foundation also committed an additional $5 million to replicate this model in other countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

In a meeting this evening with the President of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera, Administrator Power reaffirmed the U.S. government’s support for Malawi’s efforts to reform its economy, enhance anti-corruption efforts, and improve food security.
