Press Release

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) welcomes the reaching of an agreement by the UN World Food Program (WFP) to establish humanitarian operations in Venezuela. WFP will provide critically needed food assistance and reach millions of children in need.

The agreement allows WFP to establish operations inside the country and provide emergency food assistance, based on its own independent assessments of humanitarian needs and free from political interference. WFP will support the provision of meals to school children in Venezuela, a country where one in three people urgently need food assistance.

Venezuela’s ongoing political and economic crisis has left at least 7 million people in Venezuela in need of humanitarian assistance and led another 5.6 million Venezuelans to flee the country. We remain deeply concerned by this growing crisis and implore the Maduro regime to allow humanitarian organizations, including WFP, to have full and unhindered access throughout Venezuela.

The United States remains committed to the people of Venezuela and will continue to support them during this ongoing crisis caused by the political and economic mismanagement of the Maduro regime.
